I am a little bit behind on the updates, but I will try to think back and give you a quick snippet of what happened on Friday. The problem with these conferences is that they're so packed with information that by then end of it you are overwhelmed and forget most of it. It is even worse when you go back home and jump back into the routine of your life. I am glad I will have a few days to think back, read over the notes, and digest all the great things I've been exposed to in the past week.
We spent Friday talking about how to teach Biblical truth through storying. Throughout the session I found myself in a dilemma. I'm coming out of a few years in which I've grown into the conviction that a church is built and centered around expository preaching. As I was nodding in approval of this new method I began to wonder about the role of expository preaching. I'm not giving it up, but I definitely want to reassess the way I preach God's word.
The second part of the discussion was dialogical teaching, that is teaching through dialog. This is quite possible and closely connected with the teaching through stories. I wish I could tell you more about all the stuff I'm learning here, but I fear you might not be interested in reading about it. In fact I am surprised you made it this far. Anyways, if you want to know about it ask sometimes you see me.
The day topped off with a night at a cafe/pub listening to some live music. I continue to be impressed with the landscape, layout, and texture of the houses. Yesterday I also saw my first mountain peak in America. I've been here for 5 yrs. but I have not had the chance to visit any rocky part of the US. Now my eyes have seen the beautiful white peaks. I don't remember the name of the mountain was but it was pretty awesome, since it was all alone and quite dominating the landscape of Tacoma. After the concert at the coffee shop a few of us went to this restaurant, for their happy hour. The restaurant was really fancy (I could tell by their bathroom). The review of the restaurant is brought down by the fact that our server dropped the plate of ribs that one of us had ordered. We still gave him a $15 tip. So I guess the secret to getting a large tip is dropping your patron's plate in front of him.
